New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said those who indulge in politics based on falsehood, those who do anything to stay in power and those who declare themselves the ultimate authority will not understand Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi, whose comments came on the 150th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, was addressing party workers and leaders at an event at Raj Ghat.

"How will those whose politics is based on falsehood understand that Gandhiji was devoted to truth. How will those who are ready to do anything to gain power understand that Gandhiji was a preacher of non-violence. How will those who even in a democracy want to keep all powers to themselves understand what Gandhiji's Swaraj meant?" Sonia Gandhi said, in an apparent swipe at the incumbent government.

She said whatever has happened in the last four-five years in the country would have “pained the soul" of Mahatma Gandhi. It was saddening to see farmers in distress, the youth facing unemployment and traders suffering, she added.

"These days those who consider themselves the fortune makers of this country, I want to politely request to them that Gandhiji was symbol of love and not hate, not of distress but compassion," she added.

Meanwhile, party workers of Congress were administered oath to adhere to the principles of Mahatma Gandhi for nation building.
