The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended till 31 Aug the deadline for publication of Assam’s National Register of Citizen (NRC). The original date for preparing the final NRC was 31 July.

A special bench, headed by the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and comprising Justice Rohiton Fali Nariman, also rejected the joint plea of the Centre and Assam for re-verification of 20% of draft NRC data to eliminate large scale inclusion of illegal migrants in districts bordering Bangladesh.

The extension has been allowed on the request of NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela to perform some quality checks on the NRC list.

The case will be next heard on 7 August at 3:00 pm and all stakeholders have to be present. The court will be apprised of the stage of NRC completion process on the same date.

On 17 July, the Centre and Assam government had approached the apex court seeking direction for 20% sample re-verification of names included in the final NRC draft in the districts of Assam bordering Bangladesh and 10% sample re-verification of names included in the final draft in the remaining districts.

The Centre said with local officers being part of the process, lakhs of people were wrongfully included in the list and rightful citizens excluded.
