Serum Institute of India (SII), the maker of Covishield vaccine, is expecting to launch another vaccine, Covavax, in the country by September, news agency ANI reported, citing sources. Covavax is a version of US firm Novavax's COVID19 vaccine candidate. The clinical trials of Covavax are in an advanced stage of completion in India.

Earlier this week, Novavax Inc, which has a vaccine manufacturing agreement with Serum Institute of India, said its COVID-19 vaccine candidate was highly effective with 90.4% efficacy overall and also showed high efficacy against predominantly circulating variants. Novavax’s phase 3 trial included almost 30,000 participants in the U.S. and Mexico.

The Indian government on Tuesday said the efficacy data of Novavax covid vaccine as published by the US company against COVID-19 is promising.

"What we are learning from the available data is that this vaccine is very safe and it is highly effective but what makes this vaccine relevant for today is the fact that this vaccine will be produced in India by Serum Institute," said NITI Aayog Member (Health) V K Paul.

There is preparatory work already accomplished by the Serum Institute and they are also conducting a bridging trial which is in advanced stages of completion, Paul said.

Novavax plans to apply for regulatory clearance globally, with much of the first available doses going to low- and middle-income countries, Stanley Erck, Novavax’s chief executive officer, said on a conference call earlier this week.

Serum Institute of India plans to start clinical trials of the Novavax shot for children in July, ANI also reported citing sources. (With Agency Inputs)
