US President Joe Biden on Tuesday awarded the National Medals in the fields of science and technology to two Indian American scientists Ashok Gadgil and Subra Suresh in Washington.
Ashok Gadgil was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation by the US president.
Subra Suresh was awarded the National Medal of Science by Joe Biden.
“We're determined to return great science to America,” Biden said in remarks at the ceremony. “For this year's recipients, ‘outstanding’ may be an understatement. They’re extraordinary… They have paved the way for a generation of other scientists and innovators to pursue their own discoveries to unlock our nation’s full potential.”
Gadgil was among 12 laureates to receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
According to Berkeley Engineering, Gadgil, distinguished professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering, was recognized for “providing life-sustaining resources to communities around the world. His innovative, inexpensive technologies help meet profound needs, from drinking water to fuel-efficient cookstoves. His work is inspired by a belief in the dignity of all people and in our power to solve the great challenges of our time.”
Gadgil, widely considered to be a “humanitarian inventor”, is also a retired faculty senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Subra Suresh is a professor at large at Brown University’s School of Engineering and former director of the National Science Foundation.
He was recognized for pioneering research across engineering, physical sciences and life sciences, and particularly for advancing the study of material science and its application to other disciplines, according to Brown University.
Suresh was among nine recipients who were awarded the National Medal of Science in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday.
According to the White House, these awards are given to individuals to recognize their outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences, in service to the nation.
