Whohasn’t heard about Open AI’s ChatGPT? The “viral tech” took everyone by storm. Even those who aren’t into Artificial Intelligence stood up and took notice. But today, we are not talking about ChatGPT. We are talking about the brains behind ChatGPT- Mira Murati. Mira is one of the most innovative tech leaders of our time. She has helped to scale OpenAI and build innovative technologies and AI products. Mira’s journey is an example of the incredible impact women can have in tech.
Salesforce’s role in igniting innovation and promoting inclusivity is a game-changer for women in tech. By driving technological advancements and fostering a culture of equality, Salesforce is not only shaping the future of the industry but also paving the way for more women to lead and succeed in tech.
Salesforce has consistently pushed the boundaries of technology with its advanced AI, cloud computing, and automation solutions. These innovations are not only transforming how businesses operate but also creating new opportunities for women in the tech industry. By championing cutting-edge solutions, Salesforce is helping to break down traditional barriers and offering women greater access to leadership roles and influential positions in technology.
In India, the representation of women in the tech industry is similarly concerning, with various studies highlighting the gender disparity at different career levels. According to the Nasscom Diversity and Inclusion Summit 2023 report, women make up only 34% of the tech workforce in India, with their presence diminishing significantly as they climb the corporate ladder. The report notes that at the entry-level, women occupy about 45% of tech roles, but this percentage drops drastically as they move into mid-level management, where they represent only 25% of roles. The gap becomes even more pronounced at the senior leadership level, where women account for a mere 11% of position
These statistics reflect broader challenges women face in tech. These include limited access to opportunities, unconscious bias, and a lack of role models. Let’s unpack some of these challenges and try to find out the best way for women to thrive in tech.
Despite some progress, women in tech continue to face significant hurdles, including pay disparity, exclusion from decision-making, and limited opportunities. Over the past 35 years, the ratio of women to men in tech roles has declined, with nearly half of women leaving the industry by age 35 due to a lack of inclusivity (Accenture). Additionally, women face more obstacles in career advancement; for every 100 men promoted to managerial role.
This trend is further supported by a 2024 study from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, which reveals that women hold less than 20% of the senior leadership roles in Indian tech companies. The study emphasizes the need for targeted mentorship programs and leadership development initiatives to bridge this gap and foster a more inclusive tech environment in India.s, only 52 women receive the same opportunity (McKinsey, 2022).
Navigating these challenges requires action at all levels—organizational, societal, governmental, and individual.
