Déjà vu for 'Dada' as he now prepares to take guard as BCCI president

Ganguly’s new role comes at a time when there’s a need to restore confidence in the administration of cricket

Cricket in India has a way of muddling through to produce good results from time to time, despite corruption, ad hocism, cronyism, you name it.

That it continues to thrive is thanks mainly to the massive following the game has in the country.

Fans will hope “Dada"—the popular moniker for Sourav Ganguly—will shake things up in the administration, just as he did on the Lord’s balcony in 2002 when he ripped off his shirt in football-style celebration as a riposte to Andrew Flintoff, who had earlier done that at the Wankhede.

He is set to take fresh guard as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has been in a shambles ever since the IPL betting scandal in 2015. The Supreme Court appointed a four-member committee of administrators in 2017 after the board failed to fully implement the Lodha committee reforms aimed at setting the house in order.

BCCI now presides over the richest game in the land with little accountability. But the apex court’s intervention may have forced its hand to choose a popular former captain with a clean image as the new president. The worst thing for all stakeholders is a loss of credibility among fans. The scepticism of cricket lovers reached a peak at the turn of the millennium when match-fixing allegations embroiled Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin and several other cricketers. It was at that critical juncture that Ganguly took over the captaincy and restored the image of the game with the support of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.

So it will be with a sense of déjà vu that he will now take over the presidency of BCCI at a time when the game’s administration desperately seeks a restoration of confidence.
