Delhi Capitals' WPL 2025 journey ended in yet another heartbreak as the franchise fell just short of lifting their first ever trophy. Notably, this was the third straight defeat for Meg Lanning's team and the captain was seen with wet eyes soon after the loss.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Lanning can be seen tearing up before rubbing away some of the tears. The Delhi Capitals skipper then showed a faint smile as she received some consolation from a teammate.

In a tightly contested match on Saturday, Mumbai Indians scored 149 runs in their 20 overs, which Delhi Capitals fell short of by 8 runs. Lanning started the batting on a positive note but was eventually dismissed by Nat Sciver-Brunt on 13.

Meg Lanning on third WPL loss:

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Lanning said, “We have had another good season, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get over the line. Congrats to Mumbai – you have been excellent throughout the season. Chasing 150 was a pretty good target for us; one more partnership could have been enough, but I’m proud of the team,"

“There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Performing on the night is important, and Mumbai were too good tonight. We haven’t been able to put our best performance in the final on the board, which is disappointing, but that’s cricket," the Delhi Capitals skipper added.

Reflecting perhaps her true state of mind after the loss, Lanning added, “It has just not happened for us. We are bitterly disappointed; we put ourselves in a good position but couldn’t finish it off,"

Meg Lanning's international career:

Lanning has won five ICC Women's T20 World Cup trophies and two ICC Women's 50 Over World Cup titles, six of them as captain. The Australian had caused a stir when she decided to retire from international cricket in November 2023 at the age of 31.

In a podcast last year, Lanning had described how she used running as a way to deal with some of her struggles, but did not combine it with an increased food intake, leading to a decrease in her ability to perform consistently well for the team.

Meg Lanning's records:

In six Tests, Lanning scored 345 runs at an average of 31.36, with a best individual score of 93, with two half-centuries.
