Harmanpreet Kaur followed Suryakumar Yadav's tradition of not accepting the Women's Asia Cup winner's trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi after the Women in Blue defeated Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday to clinch a record-extending eighth continental title. The incident happened at the post-match presentation after the Women's Asia Cup 2026 final as the Indian team didn't turn up at all.
Although the Indian men's team turn up at the post-match presentation ceremony a year ago at the same venue, but refused to collect the trophy and medals from Naqvi, who also holds the post of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. Following the end of the match, the Indian players had a small presentation ceremony amongst themselves.
Visuals showed that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajiv Shukla congratulating the whole team pitch-side and handed over the best fielder's medal to Nandni Sharma. At the presentation ceremony, Sri Lankan team led by Chamari Athapaththu collected their medals and runners-up cheque from the ACC chief Naqvi.
Presenter and former Sri Lankan fast bowler Farveez Maharoof wrapped the presentation ceremony after having a chat with Athapaththu. Another visual on social media showed that following their own presentation ceremony, the Indian players made their way into the dressing room.
Meanwhile, following the presentation ceremony, Naqvi was seen leaving the Dubai International Cricket stadium in a hurry, but without the trophy. Earlier, during the match, Naqvi was sitting in the same VVIP stands as BCCI's Shukla and Saikia. The ACC chairman also congratulated Shukla after India's victory over the Sri Lankan opponents.
As far as the match is concerned, Shafali Verma and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana struck forceful fifties, while the bowlers under Sree Charani produced an equally intense effort as India crushed Sri Lanka by 72 runs to extend their continental domination.
Openers Shafali (68) and Mandhana (59) produced a symphony of power and grace during their stand of 129 in just 12.5 overs, guiding India to 183/5 in 20 overs. The Lankans managed to rein in the opposition's middle-order in the business end of the innings, but they were no match for the guile of Indian bowlers -- led ably by Charani (4/20) -- ending up at 111 all out.
Harmanpreet said India's win was a result of consistently matching the high standards they had set for themselves. "We set some really high standards for us, and we had to match them every day, and I'm pretty happy with the way we all came up together," she told to the host broadcaster.
“We know how much potential we have, and we have a great team. I think we played to our standards because that's what we discussed when we came here. we have certain standards, and we have to keep matching them every day. And we are very happy with the way we all performed,” she added.
Next up for India is the Asian Games 2026 in Japan. India women will start their campaign directly in the quarterfinals, hosts Japan on September 18.
