It usually does, and on Saturday it once again did. The quality shone and the cream eventually did rise to the top as India just got the better of Afghanistan in an encounter that was gripping till the 100th over.

Afghanistan though rattled India’s cage more than five-time champions Australia, 1992 champions Pakistan and one of the pre-tournament favourites New Zealand. That valiant effort wasn’t enough as Afghanistan fell short by 11 runs at Southampton.

Requiring 16 runs off the last over, Mohammed Shami produced a master class to wrap up the tail, and pickup a hat trick, to give India their fourth win of the ICC cricket World Cup 2019.

Shami initially removed Mohammad Nabi for a brilliant 52, caught on the long-on boundary by Hardik Pandya, he then followed it with the wickets of Aftab Alam and number 11 Mujeeb Ur Rahman of the next two deliveries and bowl out Afghanistan for 213 in their chase of 225.

Earlier, India posted a score of 224 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to half-centuries from skipper Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav.

Rohit Sharma experienced his first failure of the tournament, while MS Dhoni was stumped for the first time in ODIs in 2011.

Afghanistan began the chase well and were in the game till the very last over with useful contributions from batsmen throughout the order. Rahmat Shah made 36, while skipper Gulbadin Naib got 27.

Apart from Shami, who got four scalps, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal and Hardik Pandya picked up two wickets each.

India are still unbeaten in the tournament with nine points from five matches, Afghanistan meanwhile have zero points from six games.

India next take on West indies, Bangladesh are next up Afghanistan.
