Shubman Gill's Team India and Harry Brook-led England are currently taking on each other in the third and final ODI at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
The ODI series is very well poised at 1-1. India won the first ODI in Birmingham by six wickets, whereas England levelled the series with a four-wicket victory in the second ODI in Cardiff.
Players of both teams are wearing black armbands to pay tribute to legendary West Indian all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away aged 89 on Friday. Both the teams also observed silence for a minute before the start of the match.
Gary Sobers' legendary career
Gary Sobers played for West Indies from 1954 and 1974. He played 93 Tests and just one ODI during his 20-year international career. He aggregated 8032 runs from 93 Tests at an average of 57.78. He registered 30 half-centuries and 26 centuries.
He was also an excellent fielder and bowler as well. He managed to take 109 catches in total, and ended with 235 wickets at an economy rate of 2.22. He registered as many as eight four-wicket hauls and six five-wicket hauls in the longest format.
As far as Sobers' county cricket career is concerned, he played for Nottinghamshire from 1968 to 1974. In 1968, he set the famous record of becoming the first batter to hit six sixes in an over. He achieved the feat while facing Malcolm Nash, who was playing for Glamorgan.
Sobers played 18 Tests against India and aggregated 1920 runs at an average of 83.47. This included seven centuries. He also took 23 Test wickets against India.
Apart from Sobers, former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis is the only other player tto have scored 8000 runs and taken 200 or more wickets in Tests.
Sobers led West Indies in 39 Tests, but the West Indies managed to win just nine matches under his captaincy. The Caribbean side lost 10 matches and drew 20 matches under Sobers.
England pacer Jofra Archer termed Gary Sobers as “one of the greatest all-rounders ever”. "To the community of West Indies cricket, he is a legend - one of the greatest all-rounders ever. I saw him a couple of months ago when I was at home in Barbados and he said he was moving well for his age. I was very sad to hear the news (of his passing)," he told England broadcasters Sky Sports ahead of the third ODI.
At the time of updating this report, England, who had won the toss and opted to bat, were 125/0 after 20 overs, with Jacob Bethell having scored a fifty.
India will be looking to sign off the England tour with an ODI series victory after having endured a 4-0 T20I series defeat prior to this.
