Team India's Surprise For Sri Lanka Tests: It's Not Sooryavanshi; Maiden Call For This 33-Year-Old…

The BCCI on Tuesday announced India's 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in August. Ravindra Jadeja has returned to the side following an injury layoff.

Shubman Gill will continue to lead the Indian side, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. The squad also features Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Devdutt Padikkal.

Ravindra Jadeja has not played competitive cricket since May, when the Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder sustained a tennis elbow injury during IPL 2026.

His return will significantly strengthen India's balance, with Jadeja expected to play a crucial role with both bat and ball on spin-friendly Sri Lankan pitches.

Sai Sudharsan, Jasprit Bumrah's availabilities

The availabilities of Sai Sudharsan and Jasprit Bumrah, however, will be subject to clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), the BCCI said via an official statement.

Sai Sudharsan had sustained a left elbow injury during Gujarat Titans' (GT) IPL 2026 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in May, but he did play in the rest of the tournament. He also played in the unofficial Test series for India A against Sri Lanka A in late June/early July, and scored two centuries in two matches.

Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, sustained a knee injury during the second ODI against England in Cardiff earlier this month. That injury forced him to miss the third ODI at Lord's.

The statement also added that Washington Sundar, who sustained a hamstring injury during the second ODI against England, will not be available for the first Test that starts from 15 August in Galle. Uncapped all-rounder Saransh Jain has replaced Washington Sundar in the squad.

The first Test in Galle will be followed by the second Test that will take place at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) from 23 August. Both the Tests will be part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

The Shubman Gill-led India are currently in fifth place in the WTC standings with 52 points and a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.15. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are in sixth place with 20 points, with a PCT of 41.67.

The top two teams in the nine-team WTC standings at the end of the league stage will qualify for the final, which will take place at The Oval in London from 9 June next year. The WTC standings are determined by points percentage (PCT) rather than the total points accumulated.

India squad for Test series vs Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill [C], KL Rahul [VC], Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant [WK], Sai Sudharsan*, Dhruv Jurel [WK], Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Jasprit Bumrah*, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain.
