India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a heated altercation with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando on day one of the second Test in Colombo on Sunday. The incident took place in the 17th over of India's innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45.
The India opener slammed three consecutive boundaries against Fernando in the 17th over, but immediately after the pacer cleaned up Jaiswal. Fernando then gave an animated send-off to Jaiswal as the former celebrated the wicket with his Sri Lankan teammates.
Jaiswal lost his composure and confronted Fernando as the two of them clashed heads. The two of them were eventually separated by Sri Lankan players, led by skipper Dhananjaya de Silva, and the on-field umpires.
As per Clause 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, “inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person during an international match" is considered to be a Level 1 or Level 2 offence when there is contact between the players or the player support personnel.
Clause 2.13, on the other hand, includes that of “personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person during an international match”.
At the moment, it looks as though the incident could be a Level 1 or Level 2 offence, which means Jaiswal could either receive an official warning from the ICC or be fined up to 50% of his match fee.
However, should the ICC deem the incident more severe, it could be classified as a Level 3 or a Level 4 breach. In this case, Jaiswal could be banned for two to four Tests or four to eight ODIs. Under Level 5, the punishment ranges from a possible ban of 5 Tests or 10 ODIs to a life ban, depending on the seriousness of the offence.
However, Jaiswal seems safe for now, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to release an official statement on the incident or punish both Jaiswal and Fernando.
India, who won the first Test, ended the opening day of the second Test with a total of 300/5, with Devdutt Padikkal (117) scoring another century in the series and Shubman Gill hitting a half-century.
India won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs, with Padikkal named Player of the Match for his century in the first innings.
