Chasing 273 to win, Rohit Sharma went on a six-hitting spree, smashing an 84-ball 131 to record the most number of centuries in World Cup history, while Ishan Kishan (47), Virat Kohli (55 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (25 not out) chipped in with use contributions as the hosts romped home in 35 overs.
Rohit and Ishan shared a 156-run partnership for the opening wicket to set the platform for the chase.
Earlier Rohit Sharma hit his 554th career six during the World Cup match against Afghanistan on Wednesday, surpassing the mark of West Indies star Chris Gayle.
The India captain achieved the feat from all three formats of the game when he smashed fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq for his third hit over the fence in the team's pursuit of a 273-run target.
Rohit also crossed 1,000 runs in World Cup matches and then reached his 50 off 30 balls.
His record six brought fans to their feet at the nearly packed stadium.
Gayle, a left-hand batsman and self-styled "Universe Boss", has 553 sixes to his name with Pakistan's Shahid Afridi a distant third with 476.
India's pacer bowled well to restrict Afghanistan on 272/8 after 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah clinched 4 wickets, Hardik Pandya 2, while Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur got one wicket each. For Aghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai played well to take the score forward.
All rounder Hardik Pandya provided India with BIG wicket as he ended the partnership Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai. After some expensive overs, Indian bowlers are coming back in the game.
Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai are playing in a good partnership and provided the required stability to Pakistan. Both Afghanistan batters have smashed his 50 and Indian bowlers are chasing wickets.
India bowlers have tight grip over the match now as Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur clinched one wicket each to dominate Afghanistan's batting. Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran started on a stable note but this was not acceptable to India's Jasprit Bumrah who dismissed Ibrahim Zadran to provide India with its first breakthrough.
India take on Afghanistan in their second match of the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley International Stadium in Delhi. Live action for the match between Afghanistan and India will start from 2:00 PM onwards while the toss is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
The in-form Indians will miss the services of young cricket prodigy Shubman Gill, who has not travelled with the team to Delhi due to a severe bout of dengue fever.
India opened the tournament with an emphatic win over five-time champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The game did not always look in India's favour, with the top order getting out early, but the stellar innings of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli helped the team to a memorable six-wicket win from a score of 2/3.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, had a tough start to the ODI World Cup with a six-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in their first encounter at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala.
Rohit Sharma's India will be looking to continue their winning ways and consolidate their place at the top of the points table ahead of their marquee clash with Pakistan. Afghanistan, on the other hand, will be looking to make a statement by beating the two-time world champions in their capital city.

Rohit Sharma says, "It was a good pitch to bat on, just backed myself to play my natural game. I knew once I got my eye in, the wicket was going to get easier for me. Something that I have been working on from a long time. It's a special feeling to get a World Cup hundred. Really happy with that. Don't want to think too much (scoring 7 hundreds in just three world cups), I don't want to lose my focus. You need to make such things count. You gotta make it big. Some of it (the shots he plays) is premeditated. I let my instincts take over at times, sometimes it really works well. It's my job to make sure to get those starts especially in run chases. That's something I have done in the past and something I love doing. Sometimes it (attacking the bowlers) works, sometimes it doesn't. Just need to keep doing it and keep putting oppositions under pressure going forward.
