Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has been ignored once again as the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI men's selection committee announced the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand on Saturday. The India vs New Zealand ODIs will be played in Rajkot (January 11), Saurashtra (January 14) and Indore (January 18). Shubman Gill will lead the side.
Ever since the ICC Champions Trophy last year in March, Shami has not been considered for the national team despite consistent performances in the domestic circuit for Bengal. With close to 45 wickets in the ongoing season, Shami certainly deserved a recall in the national setup.
Expectedly, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pacer Jasprit Bumrah have been rested to keep them fresh for the T20 World Cup and the T20I series against the Kiwis. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant have made it to the Indian ODI squad for the first time since the Champions Trophy, following his two half centuries for Delhi in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer, who has been out of action since his rib cage injury in Australia, has been included in the side, along with captain Gill. Iyer has started his match simulation practice at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. However, his participation is subject to fitness.
Gill is also making a return to the ODI I setup after missing against South Africa due to injury. The ODI and Test captain had suffered a neck spasm during the first Test against South Africa in November. Since then he missed the remainder of the Test and the ODI series against the Proteas. He returned in T20Is, but missed the final two gams due to a foot injury.
