NEW DELHI : Pat Cummins, currently the number one ranked Test bowler in the world, on Thursday became the most expensive overseas player in Indian Premier League.

Kolkata Night Riders shelled out 15.5 crore ($2.2 million), nearly 43% of their purse, for the New South Welshman at the auction for the 12th edition of the tournament.

The 26, year old has previously played for Delhi Daredevils (as they were known then) in the 2017 edition and Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 edition.

Prior to Cummins becoming the most expensive buy, Ben Stokes was the player a team had spent most money on and that was when he was picked up for 2.16 million in 2017 by Rising Pune Supergiant. Overall, Cummins is third on the list of most expensive IPL players ever bought with Yuvraj Singh occupying the first and third rank with Gautam Gambhir second, having also been bought by KKR.

Pat Cummins will not be playing Big Bash League in Australia this summer as he will be involved in international action but this contract is equivalent to almost two franchises down under.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 and will be looking to replicate that during the 12th edition of the competition.
