Shubman Gill blamed for Yashasvi Jaiswal's run out in IND vs WI 2nd Test; Ex-India coach says ‘…Gill needed to agree’

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar put the entire blame on Shubman Gill for the run out of Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 2 morning of the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi on Saturday. The incident took place on the second ball of the second over of the day.

After driving Jayden Seales through mid-wicket, Jaiswal immediately went off for a single. Gill, who was at the non-strikers end, started initially, but upon seeing the ball at the fielder's hand, turned back at the last moment. Jaiswal, who was half-way down the pitch by then, had to return back but fell short of crease as Tevin Imlach did the rest behind the wickets.

In complete disbelief, Jaiswal slammed his forehead with his hand and argued with Gill that it was a striker's call. Bangar, who on-air at that time, opined Gill might though about the speed of the shot before turning back for the run. “He immediately went off after the drive. Gill started initially and then said 'no',” Bangar, who was India's batting coach from 2014 to 2019, continued.

“It was a half-and-half chance and the fielder was also aware where the batters were. I think Shubman Gill was thinking about the speed of the shot. It was a striker's call that Gill needed to agree on. Jaiswal came down and returned a lot of ground. I think in this case the non-striker is to blamed,” added Bangar, who played 12 Tests and 15 ODIs for India.

India declare first innings at 518/5 on Day 2

Starting on an overnight score of 173, Jaiswal could add just two runs to be dismissed for 175. Besides Jaiswal's hundred skipper Shubman Gill struck an unbeaten 129 as India declared their first innings on a commanding 518/5 after resuming the day on 318/2 at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Gill, who started the day on 20, took on the West Indies attack with his classy strokeplay, hitting 16 fours and two sixes en route to his fifth hundred this year and 10th overall in the longest format. He and wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel (44), shared 102 runs for the fifth wicket and put on quick runs after the lunch break.
