Sunrisers Hyderabad fell nine runs short of breaking their own Indian Premier League (IPL) record despite a classic hundred by Heinrich Klaasen against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium. The clash doesn't hold any significance as both KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad are out of playoffs contention.
Batting first in the final game of their season, Sunrisers Hyderabad were off to a flying start, racing to 92/1 in just 6.5 overs before Abhishek Sharma fell victim to Sunil Narine. With Travis Head in company, Klaasen added 83 runs in just 35 balls for the second wicket.
At the time when Sunrisers Hyderabad were looking at 300-rum mark, Narine once again got into the act by dismissing Head for 76 with the score reading at 175/2 in just 12.4 overs. Despite losing Head, Klaasen continued his carnage with a 37-ball hundred.
It was the South African's second in IPL, also the third-fastest in the history of the tournament. Klaasen is tied with Yusuf Pathan, who had also scored a 37-ball ton for Rajasthan Royals in 2010.
The record is still held by Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), who scored a 30-ball hundred in 2013, followed by 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's (Rajasthan Royals) 35-ball ton in this season.
In the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad had to be content at 278/3 in 20 overs - third-highest total in the history of the league. The top two highest totals in IPL are also held by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sunrisers Hyderabad had scored 287/3 in 20 overs against RCB in Bengaluru last year for the highest IPL total. They missed their own record by just one run by scoring 286/6 in 20 overs against Rajasthan Royals earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Klaasen was happy to have repaid the faith of the franchise. “The franchise spent a lot of time and money to play this brand of cricket, and it was up to us to step up to the mantle,” added the South African during the innings break.
The right-hander also admitted that Sunil Narine's spell was most difficult to play. “I tried to hit every ball for six, there was a spell from Narine where it was quite difficult, but I tried to improvise. The hard lengths are a bit tougher to play,” he said.
