Vaibhav Sooryavanshi misses hundred for second straight time in IPL 2026, walks off to a standing ovation in Chandigarh

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi missed on a well-deserved hundred once again for the second consecutive time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs as the Rajasthan Royals opener fell short by four runs against Gujarat Titans in the Qualier 2 in New Chandigarh on Friday.

Coming to bat on the back of a 29-ball 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator, Sooryavanshi showed enough maturity after partner Yahashvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel walked back in the hut in the second over. Unlike hs power-hitting, Sooryavanshi took time in the middle and played according to the situation, by bringing up his sixth IPL fifty this season in 30 balls.

With wickets falling at the other end, Sooryavanshi hanged on at one end, tormented the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Jason Holder, and Mohammed Siraj with a flurry of sixes. However, it was Rabada, who got better of the 15-year-old with a bouncer, leaving the teen just four runs short of what could have been his third IPL hundred in the tournament.

Soon after his dismissal, Sooryavanshi's disappointment was clearly visible. He walked off to a standing ovation from the entire crowd, including IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, and other BCCI dignitaries.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi first to 700 runs in IPL 2026

Sooryavanshi smashed seven sixes and eight fours to make 96 off 47 balls. In the process, Sooryavanshi became the first batter in IPL 2026 to breach the 700-run mark. The southpaw now sits at 776 runs in 16 matches. Sooryavanshi also equalled Australia Glenn Maxwell - on three - for getting dismissed in nineties for most times in a single IPL edition.

This is the fifth-best IPL season in terms of runs, with Virat Kohli (973 runs in 2016), Shubman Gill (890 runs in 2023), Jos Buttler (863 runs in 2022) and David Warner (848 runs in 2016).

1000-strong for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

In another feat, Sooryavanshi became the fastest player to complete 1,000 runs IPL in terms of balls taken. In 23 matches and innings, Sooryavanshi has 1,028 runs at an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of 228.95, including two centuries and six fifties, with a best score of 103.

He is the fastest to reach 1,000 IPL runs, in just 440 balls, outdoing West Indies legend Andre Russell (in 545 balls). In terms of innings, Sooryavanshi is the second fastest, reaching the milestone in 23 innings, with former Australia and Punjab Kings (PBKS) star Shaun Marsh (21 innings) at the top.
