Arsenal have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign England international Ezri Konsa in a deal worth £51 million plus add-ons. The 28-year-old centre-back is set to complete his move to the Emirates Stadium after saying goodbye to his Villa teammates. Notably, he is scheduled to undergo a medical on Thursday.
The negotiations between the two Premier League clubs progressed smoothly in recent days. Arsenal identified Ezri Konsa as a priority target earlier in the summer window. The Gunners needed reliable defensive cover after learning that William Saliba would miss the opening weeks of the new season due to a back issue that flared up towards the end of last campaign.
Arsenal also looked at Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah as an alternative option. However, the German club showed no interest in selling the 23-year-old. That left Konsa as the clear preferred choice for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The signing addresses a clear short-term need on the right side of central defence. Even with Jurrien Timber expected back at some stage, Arsenal remained light at right centre-back. Young Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera has impressed in limited appearances, yet the club wanted a more experienced option ready to start matches immediately.
Konsa offers versatility. He can operate as a right centre-back or at right-back, though he performs best in the middle of a back three or four. His style relies on sharp positioning and reading of the game rather than pure physical aggression. He is also comfortable on the ball and capable of progressing play with progressive passes or carries when required.
Having started regularly in the Premier League for seven seasons and gained Champions League experience, Konsa arrives with a solid pedigree. Arteta is expected to favour the new signing’s experience when selecting his first-choice right-sided centre-back once the defender settles into training.
Arsenal enter the new season with genuine ambitions of retaining their Premier League title and competing strongly in Europe. Adding a proven defender like Konsa improves their chances of staying competitive while Saliba recovers. The move also reduces the risk of rushing the Frenchman back too early or overloading him once he returns.
Last season’s Champions League final highlighted how squad depth and fitness can decide major ties. Several Arsenal defenders were either carrying injuries or unavailable. Bringing in Konsa helps the squad avoid similar problems in the latter stages of this campaign.
While the arrival of a 28-year-old is not the most glamorous transfer, it is a practical one. Arsenal are operating in a win-now window with a core group of players still in their prime. Strengthening the defence now gives them a better platform to chase more silverware over the next couple of seasons.
