Newcastle United and Liverpool supporters came together in a powerful show of respect on Sunday as both clubs paid tribute to the late Kevin Keegan. The former England captain, who starred for both sides and later managed Newcastle, passed away last month at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer. Their Premier League season opener at St James' Park marked the first meeting between the teams since his death.

Family and former players gather at St James' Park

Members of Kevin Keegan's family sat in the directors' box to watch the occasion. Several players from his memorable first spell as Newcastle manager between 1992 and 1997 also attended. Among them were Alan Shearer, Rob Lee, Peter Beardsley, Tino Asprilla, Warren Barton, Shaka Hislop, Lee Clark, Darren Peacock, Steve Watson, Ruel Fox, Steve Howey and Liam O'Brien. Their presence underlined the lasting impact Keegan made during those exciting years on Tyneside.

Special pre-match tributes light up the ground

In the warm-up, players from both Newcastle and Liverpool wore shirts with “Keegan 7” on the back. A few minutes later, a striking mosaic formed from more than 500 shirts left outside the stadium after Keegan’s death was unfurled in the centre circle. A tribute video then played on the big screen, reminding everyone of his career highlights and the joy he brought to fans.

Supporters’ group Wor Flags staged one of the most impressive displays of the day. Every seat in the ground took part, including those occupied by Liverpool fans. “Keegan 7” appeared in the Leazes End, a huge tifo of “King Kev” filled the East Stand, and the Gallowgate End carried a famous quote from the man many still call the most transformational figure in Newcastle’s history:

"I want people to dream about their football club. They should. We should all be dreamers at heart. Some people are the opposite and say, 'We can't do that'. But when you ask them why, they can't give a reason. Well, I say, 'Why not?'"

Emotional minute’s applause unites the crowd

Players and supporters then stood together for an emotional minute’s applause. The chant of “one Kevin Keegan” rang around St James’ Park, creating a moment of shared respect between rival fans. It was a fitting farewell to a player and manager who always encouraged supporters to believe in bigger things.

Kevin Keegan family thanks fans for comfort and love

Before the match, Kevin Keegan’s family released an open letter thanking supporters for the comfort they had provided. They spoke of the tributes left outside the stadium and the deep feeling they created.

"The sea of black and white shirts and scarves, alongside colours from so many other clubs, reminded us how much Kevin meant to the footballing world. It was a sombre moment that reminded us of our pain and loss, yet matched with immense pride and love as we read so many personal and heartfelt messages. Kevin always shared his love for Newcastle United, Geordies, and the city, captivating us with stories told with his infectious smile. Seeing these tributes brought those stories to life for Kevin's grandchildren, showing them how deeply their grandfather was loved in return."

The day showed how one man’s passion for the game can still bring people together long after he has gone. Newcastle and Liverpool set aside rivalry to honour a true football legend.
