Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign England international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, strengthening their defence amid a growing injury crisis. The deal sees the 25-year-old centre-back move to the Etihad on a long-term contract this month.
Manchester City have leapfrogged rivals like Liverpool in the chase for Guehi. After Liverpool's near-miss last summer, when a £35 million deal collapsed at the last minute due to Crystal Palace's failure to secure a replacement, the Reds planned to wait for his free transfer in the summer. However, City's pressing needs have changed the landscape.
Pep Guardiola's side has faced significant defensive setbacks this season, with injuries to Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Josko Gvardiol exposing vulnerabilities. Guehi's experience, ball-playing ability, and leadership make him an ideal fit for both short-term stability and long-term planning.
Manchester City have made a strong move by presenting Marc Guehi with an attractive contract offer, advancing personal terms rapidly. The next step involves negotiating a transfer fee with Crystal Palace. Reports suggest City are prepared to bid around £30 million ($40m), though Palace value their skipper higher at £35-40 million.
This fee is lower than Palace demanded last summer, reflecting Guehi's contract situation, he enters the final six months with no new deal agreed, making him a free agent at the end of the season.
Crystal Palace remain reluctant to lose their talismanic captain mid-season, especially after winning the FA Cup last term and competing in Europe. Manager Oliver Glasner has been candid about the situation.
Glasner said, “I'm not naive. If a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”
He added, “If you're just valuing sports, everyone in the club will say Marc has to stay. The chairman will tell you the same. But it's not one-dimensional. If you see the financial situation, it's very important. If somebody comes, there will be a moment when the club says 'now the financial issue is more important than the sports issue'. There will be a threshold where the club has to say it will happen - as long as Marc says 'I want to leave', because the final decision is always with the player.”
Glasner noted that previous offers in 2025 fell short of the club's threshold, but City's current interest may cross it.
Competing in the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup, and FA Cup, Manchester City require reinforcements quickly to maintain their multi-front challenge. Integrating Marc Guehi swiftly would bolster their backline and provide competition and depth.
