Lionel Messi struck a hat-trick and assisted in two other goals as Argentia crushed Bolivia for a 6-0 victory during the South American qualifiers for the Fifa 2026 World Cup. Notably, this was Messi's 10th international hat-trick and his first after returning from an injury he sustained at the Copa America in July.
Playing in front of the home crowd at the Buenos Aires' Monumental Stadium, Messi hit his first goal in the 19th minute of the game, followed by two more goals in the 84th and 86th minute of the match. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has now scored 112 goals in his international career, second only to 133 of Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking after the match, Messi continued to be non-commital on if he will participate in the 2026 Fifa World Cup but stated that this could be one of his last games in front of the home crowd.
"It is very nice to play here feeling the affection of the Argentina fans… It makes me emotional to listen how they shout my name. We all enjoy this connection with the fans and we love playing at home." Messi was quoted by ESPN as saying.
