Paris Paralympics 2024: India’s Kapil Parmar wins historic judo bronze in men’s 60kg category, PM Modi congratulates

India's Kapil Parmar won the historic judo bronze at Paris Paralympics on 5 September 5 after beating Brazil's Elielton de Oliveira at the Champ de Mars Arena.

He dominated his opponent from start to finish to record a 10-0 win in the bronze medal contest in the men's 60kg (J1) category. This is India's first-ever Paralympic medal in judo.

With his medal, India's total tally in Paris Paralympics reached to 25, including 5 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze.

He had earlier lost to S Banitaba Khorram Abadi in the semifinals.

According to details, the J1 class in para judo is for athletes who suffer from no to very low visual activity.

To indicate that they may need guided support before, during and after a contest, athletes in this category wear red circles.

PM Modi tweets:

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Kapil Parmar on winning the bronze medal for India in judo.

PM Modi took to X and wrote, “A very memorable sporting performance and a special medal! Congratulations to Kapil Parmar, as he becomes the first-ever Indian to win a medal in Judo at the Paralympics. Congrats to him for winning a Bronze in the Men's 60kg J1 event at the #Paralympics2024! Best wishes for his endeavours ahead.”

Parmar, who won the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games in the same category, had earlier beaten Venezuela's Marco Dennis Blanco 10-0 in the quarterfinal.

Parmar was, however, handed a yellow card in each of the two contests on Thursday.

About Kapil:

Hailing from Madhya Pradesh's small village Shivor. He had a life-altering accident when he was playing in the fields and accidentally touched a water pump, which resulted in a severe electric shock.

Following this he was taken to the hospital, where he remained in coma for six months.

Parmar's father works as a taxi driver, while his sister runs a primary school.
