Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won Paris Olympic gold despite controversy over her gender eligibility, has now launched legal proceedings in response to media reports surrounding her leaked medical records, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Wednesday.
As per the IOC statement, “We understand that Imane Khelif has taken legal action against individuals who commented on her situation during the Olympic Games Paris 2024, and is also preparing a lawsuit in response to the latest reporting.”
"The IOC will not comment while legal action is ongoing, or on media reports about unverified documents whose origin cannot be confirmed." It further added that it was “saddened by the abuse that Imane Khelif is currently receiving.”
French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia is said to have shared the medical report of Imane Khelif, which was prepared in June 2023 by endocrinologists Soumaya Fedala and Jacques Young. The report allegedly stated that Khelif was born with "testicles" and a "micro-penis." This revelation comes months after Khelif won a gold medal in women’s boxing at the Paris Olympics held earlier this year. Reports published claimed that Khelif, 25, has XY, or male, chromosomes.
The gender controversy surrounding Imane Khelif began at the Paris Games in August after she defeated Angela Carini in just 46 seconds in her opening match. Carini, visibly hurt with a broken nose, was reduced to tears and abandoned the fight. The incident sparked widespread debate, drawing comments from various public figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and author JK Rowling.
President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) chief Umar Kremlev asked IOC President to "kneel and apologise". Kremlev posted a video on his official social media and said, “Thomas Bach is to kneel down and apologise to all boxers for his lies! Le Correspondant presented a medical report confirming that Khelif is a man. Wake up, you messed up!”
