Sophie Devine etched her name into Women's Premier League (WPL) record books by dismantling Delhi Capitals' Sneh Rana for the most expensive over in the tournament's history. The explosive moment came during the Gujarat Giants' match against Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday (January 11).
Devine was in supreme form throughout her innings. She brought up her fifty in just 25 balls and continued the assault. She departed after scoring 95 off 42 balls. However, the New Zealand star batter missed becoming the first player to score a century in WPL.
Batting first as openers for Gujarat Giants, Sophie Devine and her partner raced to a solid start. The game changed dramatically in the sixth over, the final one of the powerplay when Sneh Rana came into the attack. What followed was pure carnage. Devine unleashed a stunning sequence: 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6. The two boundaries set the tone, but the four consecutive sixes left spectators in awe and bowlers helpless. Gujarat Giants raced to 80/0 after six overs, marking one of the highest powerplay scores in WPL. This brutal 32-run over shattered the previous record of 28 runs conceded by Deepti Sharma.

Gujarat Giants posted a formidable total of 209 runs with Sophie Devine's heroics, combined with contributions from teammates like Ashleigh Gardner. It helped them secure a thrilling victory by a narrow margin of 4 runs. Devine was named Player of The Match for a remarkable performance.
"We knew 210 was a good score, but the batting line-up that Delhi had, the game was always in the balance. So, for us to be able to get through by four runs, you know, really pleased for this group. I think we'll take a lot of learnings from this, but we know these pitches out here, 200, 220 probably won't be enough for us," Sophie said.
"I guess I've probably been lucky. I've played for a while now and I guess just taking each situation as it comes and trying to be really level with it. I think today, you know, it probably wasn't in my favour that last over and that almost took a little bit of the pressure off in a funny way that they were the ones that had to score the runs," she added.
"So, yeah, look, I think that sort of comes with experience and just trying to stay really level and back my skill set. I think that's something that can sometimes go out the window when you're under pressure or you want to do so well. But for me, yeah, it's just nice to be able to contribute to this group. Obviously, a new team for me and that's all you want to do. It doesn't matter if you've played one game or 100 games, it doesn't matter. It's to be able to go out there and perform for your team. That's what's really pleasing," she expressed.
