On Tuesday, Google Pay revealed its introduction of support for Aadhaar-based authentication for activating Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This means that users can now set up their UPI PIN on the popular payments app without the need for a debit card. To register for UPI on Google Pay using their Aadhaar number, users must ensure that the number they provide is the same one registered with both UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) and their bank. Google emphasizes that it does not retain users' Aadhaar numbers during the validation process.

Google has introduced a new Aadhaar-based system, as per their statement, which aims to verify users during the UPI sign-up process without requiring a debit card. To initiate the authentication process, users will be required to provide the initial six digits of their Aadhaar number. These digits are then sent to UIDAI through the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for validation, as stated by the company.

As per the information provided on NPCI's website, currently, 22 banks offer support for user authentication through Aadhaar. Google has expressed that additional banks are anticipated to incorporate support for this feature in the near future.

To successfully finalize the process, users need to ensure the linkage between their bank account and Aadhaar number. Additionally, they must sign up for UPI on Google Pay using the same phone number that is registered with both their bank and UIDAI. This adherence is essential for a successful UPI registration on Google Pay.

Upon fulfilling the aforementioned requirements, users will receive one-time passwords (OTPs) from both their bank and UIDAI. These OTPs serve the purpose of completing the authentication process. Once the authentication is successful, users can proceed to set up their UPI PIN and begin performing transactions such as sending and receiving money through Google Pay. It is important to note that Google assures users that their Aadhaar numbers are only shared with NPCI and are not retained by the company.
