WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to its users in the beta version of the application. The instant messaging application is testing a new ‘self-destructing’ messages feature. As the name suggests, messages can be timed to self-destruct within a stipulated time period. Similar to the Stories feature on the application, that lets users post pictures and videos for a limited period of time, this new feature will limit the timing on text and is expected to be restricted to private and group chats. The feature is still disabled but it may soon get operational in the future builds.

According to WABetaInfo, a website that tracks the latest WhatsApp features and changes, the feature was seen in Android versions 2.20.83 and 2.20.84. The option to self-destruct was found in the private chats. The user got a choice to self-destruct the text message in one hour, one day, one week, one month or one year. Despite the various options offered, the report suggests the feature is still disabled on the application.

Since the feature is still not functional on the beta versions of the application, we cannot say anything about its availability for the stable versions of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp recently launched the Dark Mode feature, which was in the development phase for quite a long period. The feature was rolled out to different users last week. The feature lets the users switch to a dark-coloured theme which is relatively easy on the eyes, especially in dimly-lit spaces. Considering the time it took for application to introduce dark mode on the stable version, the new self-destruct feature may remain in the pipelines for a long period.
