Google Pixel 4, 4 XL will not make its way to India, fails to obtain clearance for 60GHz motion sensor: Report

  • Google failed to receive clearance from the local authority here for radar-based motion-sensing technology called Project Soli
  • The new Pixel smartphones that relies on using certain frequency bandwidth — 60GHz mmWave—that failed to receive approval

Google launched a flurry of products at an event in New York today, from WiFi routers to smart home speakers. But the talk of the town, the Google Pixel 4 smartphones, are not likely to make their way to India, according to a TechCrunch report.

Google failed to receive clearance from the local authority here for radar-based motion-sensing technology called Project Soli, TechCrunch said. The new Pixel smartphones that rely on using certain frequency bandwidth — 60GHz mmWave—that failed to receive approval.

“Google has a wide range of products that we make available in different regions around the world. We determine availability based on a variety of factors, including local trends, and product features. We decided not to make Pixel 4 available in India. We remain committed to our current Pixel phones and look forward to bringing future Pixel devices to India," a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch in a statement.

The Project Soli radar sensors allow the Pixel 4 to carry out motion-based gestures like waving away to reject or pick a call and reducing the volume of a playing video.

The Google Pixel 4-series succeeds its previous generation by introducing a new 90Hz AMOLED display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 processor, up to 6GB of RAM, 128GB internal storage and a dual camera setup comprising 16MP +12.2MP configuration. It comes in three colours that the American tech major has cleverly named Just Black, Clearly White and Oh So Orange.

Japan will, however, receive the Pixel 4-series even though it has regulatory surrounding 60GHz transmissions. The radar-based motion sensor will simply be blocked in the region.

The Google Pixel range starts at $799 in the US.
