LG G8 ThinQ will have a 3D selfie camera with Time of Flight for face unlock
The Time of Flight (ToF) camera will allow better AR and biometric performanceToF cameras work independently of ambient lighting conditions, so they can offer much better facial recognition performance in low light
LG Electronics on Thursday said that its upcoming flagship device, the G8 ThinQ will come with a dual front facing camera system that will include a Time of Flight (ToF) camera.
LG says it has collaborated with German semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies to introduce the ToF technology to the LG G8 ThinQ. ToF cameras are also found on smartphones like the Oppo R17 Pro and offer better depth tracking and augmented reality experience. LG will use the ToF camera for enhanced security like facial unlocking as well.
The LG G8 ThinQ will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 this month.
LG said ToF sees objects in 3D and is not affected by light from external sources, allowing the smartphone camera to deliver a secure recognition rate.
The new sensor supports better face recognition used in phone unlocking and payment authentication, as well as augmented reality and virtual reality applications, it added.
According to Andreas Urschitz, president at Infineon’s Power Management & Multimarket division, 3D cameras will be found in most smartphones within the next five years and the German company will contribute a significant share.
Since ToF cameras work independently of ambient lighting conditions, they will put lower strain on both the processor as well as the battery of the device while performing tasks like facial unlocking.
Infineon believes the technology will make its way to the budget devices in the next 5 years.
