If you are one of those who thought OnePlus 6 and 6T's lacked a bit of lustre, you are in luck. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau in an interview with TheVerge said that the company's upcoming flagship will have "a whole new display which has to be seen to be believed".

TheVerge quoted Lau saying that OnePlus is spending three times as much on its display this year than on previous models, expecting this new panel to “redefine fast and smooth" and set a new benchmark for mobile displays.

OnePlus is widely expected to launch two flagships this year—the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. While the OnePlus 7 is expected to be a direct successor to the OnePlus 6 and 6T, the OnePlus 7 Pro might be launched with a premium price tag matching that of Samsung and Apple flagships. OnePlus still hasn't mentioned the launch date of its newest devices.

Reports and rumours are already hinting at the presence of a curved, notch-less, high refresh-rate display. We are talking figures of 90Hz, which will put the OnePlus 7 Pro, a consumer-centric device, straight up in the league of gaming smartphones like the Razer Phone 2 and Asus' ROG Phone.

Lau was quoted by TheVerge saying “The first time I saw it [the display] myself, I was stunned."

The high refresh rate panel will not only aid in gaming performance, but will even make general navigation through the UI much more snappy and fun. And given the fact that OnePlus has never launched a device in the recent past with an LCD display, it might as well be the first AMOLED display glued onto a smartphone sporting a high refresh-rate.

To achieve a notch-less form factor, OnePlus will adopt the strategy of using a motorised selfie camera mechanism pioneered by its sibling brands, Oppo and Vivo.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will be powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor which might be paired with Qualcomm's latest 5G modem, the X55. TheVerge believes OnePlus might not promote the 5G capabilities as much as its display given how limited 5G network availability is, today and in the future.
