Apple, the technology giant headquartered in Cupertino, has revealed its plans to implement an automatic passkey system. This new feature will enable users to log into their Apple ID on different Apple sign-in pages, such as icloud.com, using Face ID or Touch ID instead of relying on traditional passwords.
In a bid to enhance user convenience, Apple has introduced a streamlined login process for its websites, reported News18. Instead of entering their complete Apple ID details, including PIN and password, users will now have the option to simply input a passkey. This simplified login option will be accessible on Apple's website, offering users a more convenient way to access their accounts, added the report from the media publication.
According to a statement from Apple, this new update will enable users to utilize their Apple ID passkey to sign into any Apple web property. Additionally, it can be utilized in conjunction with Sign in with Apple on the web.
Apple has announced that users who are testing beta versions of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma can now try out the new feature on iCloud.com and appleid.apple.com. The official release of this feature for all supported devices is scheduled to take place later this year with the arrival of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma.
Passkeys offer a more user-friendly and highly secure alternative to traditional passwords. They are based on an industry standard implemented by the company, aiming to eliminate the need for passwords in online authentication.
By removing passwords from the authentication process, passkeys effectively decrease the chances of account breaches. Passwords are vulnerable to being leaked, exposed, or stolen, whereas passkeys mitigate these risks. Additionally, passkeys are not reused across multiple websites, unlike passwords, which further reduces the potential impact of stolen credentials on other accounts.
