Apple Inc said on Thursday it would recall a limited number of 15-inch MacBook Pro units as their batteries are susceptible to overheating and pose a "fire safety risk".The affected units were sold between September 2015 and February 2017.
Is your MacBook Pro affected?
As mentioned earlier, only a limited number of 15-inch MacBook Pro units made between September 2015 and February 2017 are affected. The unit is fairly easy to identify—it is the one with full-size ports and a taller keyboard.
If your MacBook falls in the described criteria, you might want to check its serial number on Apple's website. Apple will replace your battery for free, meaning this is a blessing in disguise—it might last longer than you might have expected, with a free new battery and all.
You can expect your MacBook to be gone for at least two weeks for repairs, however. And Apple said it will not extend the warranty for the affected MacBook units.
Apple has asked customers to stop using the affected MacBook Pro units. It also added that the recall does not affect any other units or Mac notebooks.
This isn't the first time the newer MacBooks are facing major issues. Users possessing MacBooks manufactured after 2016 have constantly reported issues with the butterfly keyboard mechanism, overheating and even uneven display lighting problems due to an issue dubbed as "flexgate". It happened because of a cable that connects the base of the laptop to the display getting stretched more than it can handle over months of opening and closing the lid.
