Speaking at the AI Forward 2023 event hosted by Goldman Sachs Group Inc and SV Angel, Gates said( as reported by CNBC), “Whoever wins the personal agent, that’s the big thing, because you will never go to a search site again, you will never go to a productivity site, you’ll never go to Amazon again,"
The Microsoft founder added that the new personal assistant will have the ability to understand the user's needs and behaviour. The AI-powered personal assistant will read things that users don't have time to read themselves, while also changing their behaviour so radically that they may never use some services again.
Gates believes it could take some time before this powerful AI personal assistant is ready and until then companies will keep integrating Generative AI-based technology into their offerings. Notably, companies have rushed to integrate generative AI-based technologies like OpenAI's GPT-4 or Google-backed Anthropic to improve the user experience.
Talking about the company that could create such technology, Bill Gates says that there is a 50-50 chance between tech giants like Google, Microsoft etc and startups to win the AI race. Gates also revealed that he was impressed by Reid Hoffman's Inflection AI. However, Gates added that he would be disappointed if Microsoft did not try to produce such a personal assistant.
Microsoft has integrated OpenAI's GPT-4 language model into its new Bing Chat feature, which combines generative AI technology with traditional Bing search.
Google has also recently announced a number of generative AI-based features to compete with ChatGPT and maintain its dominance in the search engine domain.
