Indian traffic to world’s most popular porn website Pornhub drastically falls after govt crackdown

  • India went down 12 places amidst the top countries providing traffic to Pornhub
  • India ranked number three among the countries that provided most traffic to Pornhub in 2017 and 2018

Traffic to the world’s largest porn website, Pornhub, went down drastically in the 12 months following India’s crackdown on porn. India went down 12 places among the top countries providing traffic to Pornhub, the company said in its yearly review.

The drop in traffic from India was “partly due to the Indian government blocking access to some porn sites," the website said. India ranked number three among the countries that provided most traffic to Pornhub in 2017 and 2018.

The government’s Department of Telecom told internet service providers to ban 827 websites for hosting pornographic content, back in October 27, 2018. Back then, the ban was imposed after a investigation in a rape case in Dehradun showed that the accused watched porn on their mobile phones before committing the crime. In fact, according to Pornhub’s data, 91% of users in India still access the website from their mobile phones, making the country one of the highest providers of mobile traffic to the website.

While users from India have found ways around the ban and Pornhub even created a mirror website for India, the data suggests that it has also had a noticeable impact on the number of users watching porn online. According to the Global Mobile VPN report in November this year by Top10VPN, increase in downloads of virtual private networks (VPNs) increased by 405% in India in the 12 months since October 2018.

2018 wasn’t the first time the Indian government tried to block porn in India either. The telecom ministry had also issued an order to block 857 websites in 2015, though it was forced to curb the decision later.

Despite the pornban, the government is still trying to find ways to intensify its crackdown on these websites. "It is a very serious issue. We have to come out with some concrete suggestions so that I can advise the Minister of Communication and also (the minister of) Information and Broadcasting," Rajya Sabha Chairman, M Venkaiah Naidu recently said, after suggesting that a committee be formed comprising ministers to check porn in India.

Pornhub is the largest pornographic website in the world by traffic. It is owned by a Canadian company called MindGeek

In 2019, Pornhub transferred 6597 petabytes of data, which was about 18,073 terabytes per day and 209 gigabytes per second.
