New Delhi: Indians took to messaging platform WhatsApp to send New Year greetings to friends and family. The popular Facebook-owned chat platform revealed that over 100 billion private messages were sent on New Year’s Eve worldwide out of which 20 billion were sent by WhatsApp users in India. With over 400 million users, WhatsApp is most used chatting platform in India.

WhatsApp also confirmed that, with over 100 billion messages sent, 31 December 2019 saw more messages sent than on any previous day in WhatsApp’s 10-year history.

The chat platform’s stats also show that of the 100 billion messages sent, more than 12 billion were picture messages sent around the world on New Year’s Eve.

“As we recover from New Year’s Eve’s celebrations and look ahead to 2020, WhatsApp can reveal that, during the 24 hours leading up to midnight on New Year’s Eve, a record-breaking number of messages were sent via the private messaging app worldwide," the chat platform said in a blogpost.

While revealing the data WhatsApp clarified due to the end-to-end encryption feature only a user and the person that he/she is communicating with can read what's sent, and nobody else - not even WhatsApp.

“However it seems fair to assume that a very large number of the messages sent on December 31st were wishing someone a ‘Happy New Year’," it said.

Text messaging emerged as the most popular feature on WhatsApp during 2019 followed by status, picture messaging, calling and voice notes.
