Sony revealed its latest portable gaming device on May 24, 2023, at the PlayStation Showcase virtual event. Dubbed "Project Q" internally, the device boasts an 8-inch high-definition screen and incorporates functionalities reminiscent of the DualSense wireless controller, according to Sony PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan's demonstration.

Geoff Keighley, the mastermind behind The Game Awards, has taken to Twitter to share his excitement about the features of the upcoming gaming device. With the rising popularity of handheld consoles like the Steam Deck, keeping a close eye on Sony's latest creation will provide a glimpse into the future of portable gaming.

According to Inquirer.Net, Sony's Project Q is designed to establish a connection with your PlayStation 5, enabling you to access and play its games. However, it requires your PS5 to remain powered on and connected to the Q via a wireless internet connection. Unlike the Steam Deck, Project Q does not allow you to play PS5 games while on the move.

In order to play PS5 games outside of your designated gaming area, you will need to bring your PS5 along, keep it running, and ensure a stable Wi-Fi connection. It is important to note that, as of now, Project Q does not offer any cloud gaming capabilities. Nonetheless, it proves to be an excellent choice for enjoying PS5 games in locations beyond your bedroom.

According to Keighley, Project Q will feature a dynamic 8-inch LCD screen with the ability to deliver 1080p resolution at 60 FPS, ensuring stunning visuals and seamless gameplay.

Furthermore, Sony's Project Q will incorporate elements from the PS5 DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The haptic feedback technology represents an enhanced iteration of the traditional rumble packs found in previous PlayStation controllers.

Despite the anticipation surrounding Sony's upcoming handheld device, it will face tough competition from established players like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. One of the key advantages of the Nintendo Switch is its ability to offer portable gaming without the need for an internet connection. Players can download games digitally or use physical cartridges. Additionally, the detachable controllers, known as Joy-Cons, allow for flexible gameplay options and multiplayer experiences, such as in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Sony's recent announcement of Project Q, a handheld gaming device that connects to the PlayStation 5 via Wi-Fi, aims to offer gaming away from the confines of one's room. However, as of now, no specific release date or price has been provided for the Sony Project Q. Based on similar gaming consoles, it is likely to fall within the price range of approximately $300 to $500.
