Global markets today: Japan’s Nikkei plunged 4.69% to 49,082.5, slipping below the psychologically important 50,000 level for the first time since October 27. The broader Topix fell 3.25% to 3,202.56.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed over 1 per cent to a new record high on Wednesday amid mixed trading across Asian markets. The Topix index was little changed, while South Korea’s Kospi edged up 0.17 per cent and the Kosdaq slipped 0.25 per cent.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries share price jumped 7%, Advantest shares surged over 5%, Hoya Cor stock gained 6%, SoftBank Group shares gained over 4%, while Fast Retailing shares gained 2.55%.

Stock market holiday: According to the stock market holiday calendar, Mainland China’s three major stock exchanges - Shanghai Stock Exchange, Shenzhen Stock Exchange and Beijing Stock Exchange - remained closed from October 1, Wednesday, to October 8, Wednesday, on account of the festive season.

Global markets today: Japan’s Nikkei 225 hits record high as market resumes after a holiday. The index gained 1.26 per cent, while the broader Topix index climbed 0.74 per cent.
