There are as many as eight holidays in October including Saturdays and SundaysSome banks also list October 28 and October 29 as holidays for Diwali and Bhaidooj

Bank of Baroda, which is being merged with two other PSU banks Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank, has warned that if the bank employee unions sit on strike, the functioning of the bank's branches in some of the zones may be affected. Similar warnings has been issued by other state-run banks as well, ahead of the strike call on January 8 and 9.

Today's strike, called by All-India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), was supported by around 3.2 lakh officers from various public sector banks who are demanding a wage hike and protesting against the merger of three state-run banks Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda.

The impact of Wednesday's strike will be more profound as even private bankers are expected to join the protest. According to reports, about 10 lakh bankers from all banks will be a part of the strike.

United Forum of Bank Unions' (UFBU), an umbrella body of top 9 bank unions, has given a strike call on December 26 while the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) has appealed for a strike on 21st. In between the six-day period, banks will be open only on Monday.
