Stock market holiday: BSE and NSE have announced a trading holiday on Thursday. Thus, investors must note that the Indian stock market is closed for trading today, January 15, as the BSE and NSE are shut. The trading will resume on January 16, Friday.

BSE and NSE announced that Thursday, January 15, will be a trading holiday in the equity and equity derivatives segment on account of the Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra.

As per the NSE’s 2026 stock market holiday calendar, the Indian equity market will remain closed for trading on fifteen days during the year. The schedule also shows that there are no trading holidays in February, July, and August.

The S&P 500 jumped almost 17%, taking its annual bull run to the third year in a row. The Nasdaq Composite index outperformed with a 20% rise, while the Dow Jones added 13%.

With major global markets closed on or ahead of New Year’s Day, most institutional investors have already closed out their positions, resulting in thin trading volumes commonly seen in the final days of the year.

Back home, the Indian stock market will remain open for trading on both days, as per the NSE holiday calendar. This means that both BSE and NSE will witness a normal trading day on the New Year.

According to the holiday calendar, March has the highest number of market holidays with three, followed by April and May, which have two holidays each.

Global markets are subdued as major exchanges remain closed for Boxing Day, resulting in thin trading activity. While some Asian markets continue to trade and post gains, European markets are largely closed, leading to muted liquidity and reduced participation across regions.

Indian stock markets are closed today for Christmas, marking the final holiday of the year. Trading will resume on December 26, while commodity exchanges will partially operate later in the day. The next market closure is scheduled for January 26, 2026, for Republic Day.
