The development comes a day after the Supreme Court agreed to hear Banerjee's plea seeking an expeditious decision on the disqualification petitions.

The rebel group’s MLAs visited the West Bengal chief electoral officer on Tuesday evening to submit a letter demanding recognition as the official All India Trinamool Congress and rights to the twin-flower election symbol.

The TMC has assets worth ₹1,081.78 crore, according to the 2024-25 audit report submitted with the Election Commission. This includes ₹625.78 crore is in bank accounts besides ₹250.77 crore in investments and ₹50 crore in cheque.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Prakash Chik Baraik, representing West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha, has resigned from the Upper House. This is the third such resignation within a week.

The meeting comes a day after the two leaderds met during the INDIA bloc meeting held in Delhi. This at a politically significant moment as opposition leaders continue efforts to maintain cohesion and strategic alignment following recent electoral setbacks.

Under the anti-defection law, a breakaway faction requires the support of at least two-thirds of a legislature party to avoid disqualification. With the TMC having 80 MLAs in the Assembly, the threshold stands at 54.

The Election Commission has nearly doubled the security arrangements for voting in the assembly seat that was countermanded last month over allegations of large-scale EVM tampering.

The oath-taking was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, chief ministers of NDA-ruled states, senior BJP leaders and thousands of party workers from across the state.

Article 164 of the Constitution of India says that a chief minister holds office as long as they enjoy the confidence of the Assembly. Once that majority is lost, the government becomes constitutionally untenable. Mamata Banerjee's term ends on 7 May.
