A source had revealed to PEOPLE that Diane’s health deteriorated suddenly in her last days, which was “heartbreaking” for her loved ones.
Diane Keaton’s family expressed their gratitude for all the messages that came their way after the passing of The Godfather actress. “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on 11 October,” her family said in a statement to PEOPLE.
The statement also mentioned Keaton’s support for animals, and the family urged people to donate to a food bank or an animal shelter in her loving memory. The statement read, “She loved her animals and was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much-appreciated tribute to her.”
The source that revealed Keaton’s deteriorating health to PEOPLE also revealed that in her last days, the actress was surrounded by her closest kin, and even “longtime friends” weren’t aware of her condition.
Songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, too, had said in an interview with PEOPLE that she met Diane two or three weeks before her death, and she looked extremely thin.

The actress was born in 1946 and had two adopted children, Dexter and Duke. Diane never married. Keaton won an Oscar for Best Actress for Annie Hall. She starred in movies like First Wives Club, Father Of The Bride, Baby Boom, among many others.
