Hollywood and television mourn the loss of June Lockhart, the legendary actress best remembered as Ruth Martin on Lassie and as the matriarch in Lost in Space.
Lockhart passed away at the remarkable age of 100, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of stage, film, and television.
June Lockhart died on Thursday night of natural causes, with daughter June Elizabeth and granddaughter Christianna by her side, according to People.
Family spokesperson Lyle Gregory, a friend of 40 years, told the Associated Press: “She was very happy up until the very end, reading the New York Times and LA Times every day. It was very important to her to stay focused on the news of the day.”
Lockhart’s career highlights include her Tony Award-winning performances on stage, as well as memorable appearances in classic films such as Meet Me in St. Louis. She also starred in the beloved television series Petticoat Junction, further cementing her place in the pantheon of iconic TV mothers.
Yet it was her role on Lassie, portraying the loving and steadfast Ruth Martin, that endeared her to generations of Baby Boomers. For many, she was the embodiment of maternal kindness and resilience, providing guidance and comfort in the stories of the heroic collie and his family.
Her later work on Lost in Space showcased her versatility, balancing maternal concern with the challenges of a sci-fi adventure narrative.
However, it was television that cemented June Lockhart’s legacy. In 1954, she took on the role of Ruth Martin in Lassie, a series that became synonymous with family entertainment.
June Lockhart also starred in Petticoat Junction, further exemplifying her talent for television comedy and light-hearted drama. Beyond acting, she earned a Tony Award nomination, highlighting her accomplishments on the stage and demonstrating her range as a performer.
