The late-night host’s show was taken off air for nearly a week after controversy over comments he made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Disney announced on Monday that the programme would resume, with Kimmel continuing as host.

McLachlan’s appearance is particularly significant. Just days ago, she declined to perform at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery – The Untold Story’, a docuseries about the landmark women’s music festival she co-founded.

Explaining her decision at the event, she said: “I apologise if this is disappointing, but we have collectively decided not to perform, but instead to stand in solidarity in support of free speech.”

Powell, meanwhile, will be the main sit-down guest. He is currently promoting ‘Chad Powers’, a sports comedy series he co-created with Michael Waldron, which premieres on Hulu on September 30.

The rest of the week’s line-up includes Ethan Hawke, Lisa Ann Walter and Yungblud on Wednesday, and Peyton Manning, Oscar Nuñez and Alex G on Thursday.

The Assassination of Charlie Kirk

On September 10, 2025, American political activist Charlie Kirk was shot dead while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah. The gathering marked the opening stop of the American Comeback Tour, a lecture and debate series organised by Turning Point USA, the conservative group he co-founded.

Kirk was struck in the neck by a bullet while responding to a question from the audience on the issue of mass shootings in the United States. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death.

According to investigators, the gunman had taken a position on the roof of a campus building roughly 142 yards (130 metres) from the stage.

The following day, 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson surrendered at the local sheriff’s office. He was formally charged with murder on September 16, with prosecutors announcing plans to pursue the death penalty, citing political motives behind the attack.
