R&B Icon D’Angelo, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, died at the age of 51 after he had been fighting cancer for a long time but kept it private. His family announced that he passed away peacefully on 14 October 2025.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” they said in a statement to TODAY.com. “After a long and brave fight with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer has been called home.”

All about D’Angelo

D’Angelo became popular in the mid-1990s with his first album, Brown Sugar (1995), which was a very nice combination of old-style soul and new-style R&B. The record with such singles as “Lady” and the title track not only became the source of the neo-soul sound but also brought D’Angelo a lot of positive reviews from music critics.

His second album, Voodoo, came out in 2000, and it was a chart-topper on the Billboard 200 right off the bat. This album got him two Grammy Awards, one of which was for the Best R&B Album category. Among other songs, the “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” track caught most attention from the audience, and, therefore, it became a landmark moment in popular culture, recognized and praised for its closeness, artistry, and emotional power.

D’Angelo has been absent from the public eye for several years, but he made a comeback with Black Messiah in 2014. The record, laden with social and political themes, was his way of showing that his creative power was even greater than before. The album was acknowledged for its truth, courage, and musical genius.

A legacy that lives on

Though he kept his illness private, D’Angelo’s family said he was a strong and brave man throughout his final years. In addition to his life and music, they also asked the fans to respect their privacy.

One can sing D’Angelo’s praises to no end as his impact is still there in fusing the elements of R&B and soul genres in the present-day music. His songs, filled with love, passion, and truth, remain timeless, reminding the world of an artist who changed music forever.
