Venture debt as an asset class is increasingly gaining currency. While there are financial services firms which focus exclusively on providing venture debt to start-ups, the space has also seen the interest of several wealthy individuals including Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal, who has made venture debt investments in two scooter-rental startups Vogo and Bounce. Ashish Sharma, Managing Director and India Head of Innoven Capital, the venture debt firm which started such lending in India, explains the economics of the growing asset class. Sharma also shares his views on the cash burn strategy employed by the start-ups and how the center of gravity is increasingly shifting to tech companies.
