As the climate transitions from autumn to winter snow, some animals in the northern regions change the colours of their coats or feathers with the seasons.

Here are 5 animals that go white in winter:

Species like the Arctic hare, mountain hare and snowshoe hare, change from brown or greyish to white during the winter.

Three species of weasels, namely the least weasel, the long-tailed weasel, and the short-tailed weasel change their warm summer browns for icy whites in winter. 

They are the only subspecies of the caribou family to swap their silvery summer coats for white ones with the coming of winter.

All three species of these birds swap their brown, scalloped plumage for white feathers.

These are usually brownish-grey during the summer and exchange to a frosty white in the winter.
