Commonly referred to as Chital, this deer species is widespread across India, with best viewing locations including Pench National Park, Kanha National Park, Corbett National Park, and Nagarhole National Park.

They are found in tall grasslands, reed beds along large rivers, and alluvial grasslands.  The best places to observe them include Kanha National Park, Satpura National Park, Dudhwa National Park, Kaziranga National Park, and Manas National Park.
