Justice Gavai will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. His tenure will be for 6 months from May 14, 2025, to November 23, 2025.
Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna comes from a legal family and studied at Modern School, St. Stephen's College, and the University of Delhi.
Justice Gavai practised law in the Bombay court from 1987 to 1990 before continuing his career in Delhi.
Justice Gavai represented Nagpur and Amravati Municipal Corporations and served as Government Pleader at the Nagpur Bench from 1992 to 2000.
Justice Gavai was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003, became a Permanent Judge in 2005, and was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.
Justice Gavai was part of a five-judge Constitution bench that upheld the abrogation of Article 370 in December 2023.
