DECLINING SPERM COUNT
STUDY REVEALS AN ALARMING TREND
Published By Livemint | 25 Nov, 2022
Researchers discovered sperm counts have decreased by more than 50% globally over last 46 years
Study published in the journal Human Reproduction Update shows this alarming trend
It shows that sperm count has decreased by 62.3% from 1973 to 2018
The trend has only accelerated over time
Since 1972, rate of decline has increased from 1.2% per year to 2.6% per year since 2000
Multiple factors include prenatal exposure to environmental chemicals and poor health behaviours in adulthood
Lower sperm count has been associated with an increased risk of chronic illness, testicular cancer, and a shorter life span
